Hi, John --

Martin Luther King Jr. saw the best of America in its darkest times, and willed us to become a more fair and just nation. Dr. King taught us to stand up against all injustice, big and small. He challenged us to see the best in our neighbors, and he insisted that we fight with love instead of hate.

America today is more divided than at any time since the 1960s. Hate crimes are on the rise, facts are under attack, and we have a president who is more interested in fomenting hatred than bringing us together. As I celebrate Dr. King’s life in our community today, I cannot help but wonder what he would say about our present challenges.

In honor of Dr. King's legacy, and it commitment to doing all I can to carry out his ideals, I attended two events today in Hauppauge and Medford. I was truly moved by the speakers and displays of activism and service.

To move forward together, we must take lessons from Dr. King’s teachings. Let’s speak out about injustice in our society. Let’s seek to find the good in all of our neighbors. And let’s demand the best of ourselves.
