Team,
In June 2020, I joined my colleagues in passing the Justice in Policing Act, and every day this bill waits for a vote in the Senate is a disservice to the American people. While this bill will not fix everything, it is a good step in ensuring that more Black Americans do not die at the hands of those sworn to protect and serve.
On January 7th, 2023 in Memphis, TN police officers severely beat 29-year-old Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop. Nichols died three days later from his injuries, a tragic and unnecessary death at the hands of the police. Passing this bill in the Senate is just one way we can honor his life and recommit as a nation to doing better.
Will you sign our petition demanding that the Senate bring the Justice in Policing Act up for a vote now?
The Justice in Policing Act brings much-needed reform to the way we police in America, and would end systemic violence against Black Americans. It would demilitarize police forces, ban chokeholds, make lynching a federal crime, and so much more.
The House stepped up and met this issue head-on, and now it's time for the Senate to do its job and pass this bill as soon as possible. Without it, our country remains in the same status quo that allowed the loss of life for Tyre Nichols, George Floyd, Breyonna Taylor and countless others.
The American people have made it clear that we NEED policing reform. And now - once again - the only thing standing between our country and meaningful change is inaction in the Senate.
Team — That is why I’m asking you to help us make it happen. Will you use your voice and add your name to our petition right now demanding this bill is brought up for a vote as soon as possible?
Thank you,
Team Swalwell
