Friends, I’m a member of the Columbine generation - a group that no one ever wanted, or asked, to join.
I was ten years old when the Columbine shooting traumatized our nation, and like many other young adults, I grew up learning how to hide from potential shooters in school lockdown drills.
Nearly a quarter of a century later, it’s heartbreaking to watch as we pass that trauma down to the next generations by refusing to take action.
Kids now grow up knowing that the places they go every day - whether it’s their school, their grocery store, or their synagogue or church - simply aren’t safe.
I know I speak for my generation and the ones after us when I say that we can’t take this anymore. We NEED to reinstate the federal assault weapons ban.
If you agree, please join me by adding your name to this petition demanding action.
I’m not going to dignify the NRA’s propaganda talking points against this common-sense law by repeating them here - what I will say instead is that we know the assault weapons ban saves lives. We know because we’ve seen it before! The 1994 federal ban - implemented when I was 5 years old - decreased gun massacres by 37%. And when the ban expired, gun massacres rose by 183%.
The vast majority of Americans support common-sense solutions to gun violence. The majority of gun owners support gun safety policies. Even the majority of NRA members support universal background checks for gun purchases. Despite all that, too many elected officials still live in the pocket of the gun lobby, unwilling to take a single step that could save lives, lest they lose out on campaign contributions.
It’s atrocious, and we have to keep calling it out - and keep making it clear that the American people STRONGLY support taking action.
House Democrats have introduced the Assault Weapons Ban of 2023, and I’m so proud to be an original co-sponsor. Please join me and back this life-saving legislation by adding your name here.
Thank you.
