Today, the nation honors civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King was committed to peace, non-violence and equality for all. His teachings of respect and his adherence to conscience remain relevant today more than ever.

Dr. King’s assasination was a loss to this nation, and to the civil rights movement. Unfortunately, his legacy is too often invoked to support colorblindness and watered down to make everyone feel comfortable.

Dr. King told uncomfortable truths at the risk, and eventual expense of, his life.

One of those truths was that those who are willing to say “Wait” or “Not Yet” or “It’s Not The Right Time” in the face of injustice are as guilty as anyone fighting to retain the unjust social, economic and civil systems that benefit the few over the many.

Letter from a Birmingham Jail [[link removed]] is a timely read; a reminder that we can not hinder progress for a more convenient time, because there is no such thing as a more convenient time.

We cannot settle for half measures. We cannot simply wait for justice or progress. We cannot accept the “maybe laters” any longer.

The best way to honor Dr. King is to speak up, to fight for progress, and to make a difference.
