| After a fierce, decades-long battle led by the people of Bristol Bay with broad support both within Alaska and nationally, EPA followed the law and science to establish enduring protections for the Bristol Bay watershed under the Clean Water Act. |
| For more than a decade, millions of people across the country spoke out against the looming threat of an open-pit gold and copper mine to be built in Southwest Alaska. As proposed, Pebble Mine would have generated 23 billion tons of dangerous mining waste, wiping out over 90 miles of salmon streams and more than 5,000 acres of intertwined wetlands, ponds, and lakes. It would put in jeopardy thousands of American jobs, a cultural tradition of subsistence dating back 10,000 years, and a robust sport-fishing and tourism economy. But with EPA’s landmark decision, Bristol Bay will not become a dumping ground for mine waste. A sustainable future that is firmly tied to the land and its people — “Bristol Bay forever, Pebble Mine never” — is becoming reality. |

| The Bristol Bay watershed is one of the world’s great ecosystems, and the way of life and abundant future it supports is worth the fight. Earthjustice is committed to updating our country’s 150-year-old mining laws to ensure companies don’t mine in special or sacred places and are held accountable for mines that are built. Earthjustice will also continue to represent those who oppose unlawful and destructive mining projects like the Donlin Mine, which has been proposed to be built in the neighboring Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta — threatening yet more vital salmon habitat in Southwest Alaska. |
