Dear John,

This week’s newsletter is a bit different than usual. But so was this week in D.C. We will include highlights from this very busy last week and our upcoming work in next week’s newsletter.

On Thursday morning around 7:15am, I was assaulted in the elevator of my apartment building in Washington DC. The details are starting to emerge through police and court reports, so I will just say here that I fought back and I’m very lucky to not be more injured than I am. The DC Metropolitan Police arrested a suspect on Thursday evening.

There is no evidence that this attack was politically motivated.

I wanted to let everyone know that the outpouring of support from friends, constituents and colleagues since the events of Thursday morning has been overwhelming. I’m truly grateful. I am back home in Minnesota now – resting up and healing – and ready to root against the Eagles tomorrow.

Our entire family has been impacted by the attack – and my priority right now is to take care of myself and them. I’ll have more to say about the attack soon. But yes, I’m glad my coffee was still hot.

Until next time,
