Hello,

Each February, I am reminded of a quotation from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "We are not makers of history; we are made by history."

In just the past few years, our history led to dramatic changes. During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, as many as 26 million Americans participated in Black Lives Matter protests, building the largest protest movement in history. Voters turned out in record numbers to elect the first Black, South Asian vice president of our Nation. And Black voters and Black leaders played a pivotal role in flipping the Senate majority.

In response, far too many politicians have tried to erase history. They attempted to ban an accurate teaching of racism that shaped our history. They've called for censorship because they understand that the natural progression of history will lead us to a future where their regressive views become obsolete.

That's why, this Black History Month, it's crucial that we remember that history. We must take inspiration from those who persevered and found success. And we must consider the choices made by those who stood in our way.

History has brought us to a point where we must now decide whether we will defend the civil rights of every American -- rights that Americans like John Lewis and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. shed blood for -- or whether we will allow our democracy to crumble.

In just the past few weeks, more of my colleagues have responded to the tragic deaths of Black and brown men at the hands of police by joining me in calling for new reforms, including limits on qualified immunity. I'm proud to do my part to fight for voting rights and a more equitable future for all as well, and we will continue to build momentum.

However, I also know these fights may not be won on the floor of the Senate. Elected officials, community leaders, and activists are fighting for justice in state legislatures, in school board meetings, and on the streets.

I'm inspired by the people who take part in these movements, including many of you. You carry the torch forward from the leaders of the past. I look forward to continuing to listen and fight alongside you as we build support for voting rights and transformational legislation that will allow children, families, workers, and seniors to thrive.

Together, we will win, as history marches forward.
