The Biden administration just took another dangerous step towards finalizing approval for the Willow Master Development Plan, a massive oil drilling proposal for Indigenous and environmentally sensitive land in Alaska.
The BLM’s plan would disproportionately affect the community of Nuiqsut. Nuiqsut is a predominantly Iñupiaq village of about 500 people already living through extreme pollution from existing oil projects. Iñupiat have disproportionately high rates of cancer, chronic illnesses and mental health issues. We can’t allow this or any other community in Alaska to be sacrificed to the oil and gas industry.
At the State of the Union earlier this week, President Biden said that the climate crisis is an existential threat, and that we have an obligation to confront it. Ending new oil and gas infrastructure and prioritizing people over polluters is a crucial step.
The Bureau of Land Management can still stop this disastrous oil drilling plan, but it will take enormous public pressure. Now is our moment to generate as much public pressure as possible to make sure the Willow Master Development Plan is stopped.Join the fight to protect the Arctic! Send a message today!
