Dear MoveOn member,

Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson said on Thursday that Social
Security is a "Ponzi scheme."^1

In a video, Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee told supporters, "It will be
my objective to phase out Social Security. To pull it up by the roots, and
get rid of it."^2

South Dakota Republican Senator John Thune, who is No. 2 in Senate
leadership, declared in November that Social Security should be slashed.^3

Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott is sponsoring a plan to sunset
Social Security.^4

And in the House, the Republican Study Committee—which represents a
majority of House Republicans—released a budget proposal that raises
eligibility for Social Security, withholds payments for some people, and
privatizes it.^5

So, John, we need to be clear-eyed about the threats to Social
Security.

And the time is now, as Republicans continue to refuse to raise or
eliminate the debt ceiling and are threatening to push the United States
into default on its bills and risk a full-blown global economic disaster
unless there are major cuts to social programs.

That's why MoveOn has printed a huge batch of these "Protect Social
Security for Everyone" stickers—and we’re giving them away for free, while
supplies last.

John, unless Congress raises the debt limit soon, the federal
government will go into default, triggering a global financial crisis that
economists estimate will destroy 6 million jobs and $12 trillion in
household wealth.^6

But the GOP simply does not care. All they want is to fulfill their
decadeslong dream of slashing and privatizing Social Security—because it
will benefit their wealthy Wall Street benefactors.

And whom will it hurt? The rest of us. And especially the most
marginalized among us.

Fifty-five percent of Social Security recipients are women.^7 Social
Security is the primary source of income for 40% of Hispanics, 33% of
Black Americans, and 26% of Asian Americans.^8 And thousands of LGBTQ+
couples are now eligible and have begun receiving benefits.^9

We simply must stop the GOP's attack on Social Security.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Voters just defied history and stopped a
MAGA wave of extremism at the polls. But there is more work to do to end
the filibuster, codify abortion rights into law, and defend our freedoms,
our families, and our futures. We can accomplish all this and more, but
only if we work together.
Will you chip in right now to power our critical work?
