Throughout Virginia’s over 400-year history, there still remains an unshattered glass ceiling — we have never elected a Black woman to Congress. If I win my special election on February 21, we will shatter that glass ceiling together.

My campaign is about bringing more perspectives to the table and continuing NewDem Rep. Donald McEachin’s legacy of making sure government works for all Virginians. That’s what I’ve done for the past 18 years in the state legislature, and it’s what I’ll do if given the opportunity to serve Virginians in Congress.

I am the proud daughter of community leaders and educators raised in the segregated South during the Great Depression. My great-grandfather had to take a literacy test and find three white people to vouch for him to register to vote. My father paid poll taxes. My mother didn't vote until after 1965.

I believe in the power of government to make people’s lives better — and I’ve spent the past 18 years as a public servant doing just that, from passing the Voting Rights Act of Virginia to expanding access to childcare.
