Weekend Reading

Dear John,

We join people around the world in mourning this week’s devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Tens of thousands of people have lost their lives, and millions more are facing severe weather conditions without adequate shelter, food, or water, among them many Syrian refugees.

AFSC has started an emergency relief fund to deliver emergency kits to meet immediate needs. Funds will also be used to help sustain ongoing peacebuilding work with displaced people in the region. If you have not yet contributed, please donate today. [link removed]

Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism:

Stand with immigrants on Valentine’s Day: This week AFSC will join people across the country to express love and solidarity with immigrants in detention and people seeking asylum at our borders. We’re calling for an end to all policies that criminalize and incarcerate migrants—including Title 42. Learn how you can join. [link removed] And please sign our petition urging President Biden to uphold the right to asylum! [link removed]

New study shows growing U.S. support for engagement with North Korea and China: [link removed] For decades, AFSC has worked to build bridges and advocate for peace with North Korea. Recently, we commissioned an opinion poll of U.S. adults. We found that many people agree with our values. Here are six takeaways from our study, writes AFSC’s Beth Hallowell.

AFSC sues San Francisco police for refusing to turn over public records on weapons: [link removed] The lawsuit is part of AFSC’s work to provide the public with information about militarized policing—and organize with communities to stop it. “We hope that this lawsuit, and our efforts to increase transparency and accountability for law enforcement agencies in San Francisco and across the state, will help mitigate the harm and violence enacted by police,” says AFSC’s John Lindsay-Poland. A defining moment for Palestinian rights: [link removed] Israel’s new right-wing government has ramped up violence against Palestinians. This violence is happening in the context of deepening Israeli colonization of Palestinian land. In this critical moment, the U.S. must speak out against the growing threat to Palestinian lives, rights, and future, writes AFSC’s Mike Merryman-Lotze and Jehad Abusalim.

Register for our next No Way to Treat Child campaign webinar (Feb. 14, 12 p.m. ET / 9 a.m. PT): [link removed] How are Palestinian children and human rights workers coping with the escalation of Israeli violence in the occupied West Bank? Join staff from AFSC and Defense for Children International-Palestine to learn more and find out what you can do to help.

Opinion: We must save Friendship Park and stop Biden’s bigger border wall: [link removed] Last month, the Biden administration announced it would move forward with building a 30-foot border wall around Friendship Park. The decision came despite public outcry and recent deaths and injuries from border wall falls. “The threat to replace and further elevate the wall at Friendship Park will bring even more death and disgrace to our region,” writes AFSC’s Adriana Jasso. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)

New monthly gifts matched: [link removed] By this Valentine’s Day, we are looking for 125 people to start a new monthly gift. If you are not yet a Partner for Peace, now is the perfect time to join. A generous donor will match your first month’s donation with $100 if you give by this Tuesday.

Be well and take care
