Kevin McCarthy agreed to several outrageous concessions to ingratiate himself with the most extreme faction of his caucus and win the House speakership. One of those concessions was a committee hearing for a proposal that would abolish the IRS, the entire federal tax code--including estate and gift taxes only paid by the very wealthy--and impose a national 30% sales tax. ?

The new 30% sales tax would require people of all incomes to pay the same tax rate on all the goods they buy. Billionaires would pay the same 30% tax rate under the national sales tax that teachers, firefighters, truck drivers, and nurses would pay. You'll see rising prices for everything from groceries to gas, clothing, healthcare, and more.

This tax would disproportionately affect working people and the middle class by increasing out-of-pocket expenses on everything we buy.

Inflation has already raised the monthly bills we struggle to pay. Now Republicans want to raise them even more.

Moreover, 30% wouldn't be enough to compensate for the lost revenue. According to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), at least a 60% national sales tax would be required to replace federal taxes.

Help fight back against the House Republican agenda that seeks to slash taxes paid by the wealthy and increase taxes paid by working families.
