Dear John

There’s now less than a week to go until Star Count! We can’t wait to gaze up at the skies and count the stars, and we hope you’ll be joining us.

In case you missed it, wildlife TV presenter and conservationist Chris Packham shared the news of our Star Count on his social media channels – watch the video on Twitter or over on YouTube.

As January came to a close, the government announced new hedgerow targets as part of its new Environmental Improvement Plan. This is a huge win for our campaign and we couldn’t have done it without you – read on to find out more.

With February in full swing, spring is just around the corner. This means lots of wildlife waking up after a period of hibernation through the winter - read on for what we can look forward to spotting in nature this month.

Star Count is coming!

Between 17-24 February join us in counting the stars in Orion. Your results will help us make a map of where star-spotters are enjoying deep, dark skies. By showing on a map where light pollution is most serious, we can work with local councils and others to decide what to do about it. Every count helps - sign up to take part below if you haven’t already!

A huge campaign win for hedgerows

We’re celebrating a big step forward for nature and climate as the government has finally announced an ambitious target to create or restore 30,000 miles of hedgerows by 2037, and 45,000-miles of hedgerows by 2050, under the new Environmental Improvement Plan 2023.

CPRE joins coalition on food, farming and nature

We are delighted to have joined a new coalition of farmers and environmental charities to agree on a set of principles for the future of farming. We hope this will help farmers and environmentalists work together more effectively to create sustainable farming that works for people and nature while helping us resist climate breakdown.

Wildlife to watch out for in February

Spring is just around the corner! From scarlet elf cups and short-eared owls to primroses and common toads, nature writer Alexandra Pearce-Broomhead predicts the wildlife we can look forward to spotting in February. Have you seen any of these in your local countryside or green space? Let us know by tagging us in your pictures on social media!
