How we’re saving lives in Turkey right now

Watching the death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria grow to more than 22,000 people over the last few days has been truly awful. So many lives lost, so many communities destroyed, so many families searching through rubble in freezing temperatures… it can be easy to feel helpless and hopeless.

However, when I see our Project HOPE emergency responders and partners at work, I feel not only pride to be part of their team, but hope for the people of Turkey and Syria that we will rebuild together.

Our teams on the ground in Turkey are working with local partners:

Deploying a K-9 search and rescue team.

Shipping emergency health kits, medical supplies, and lifesaving medicines.

Providing direct medical and mental health support for displaced and traumatized survivors.

Sourcing generators, infant incubators and hygiene kits.

Identifying access points to re-establish supply chain routes to disaster areas.

In addition to the earthquake injuries, we’re challenged by the extremely cold temperatures and increased risks for infectious disease. Snowfall and significant wind chill are creating dangerous conditions for survivors and rescue teams, including hypothermia and frostbite.
