Today, we remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most
influential advocates for civil rights in the history of our country. His work
and words continue to resonate, especially in these trying times.
His fight has become our fight. Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck a
huge blow to voting rights when they decided state courts had no say over
partisan gerrymandering. And, the Supreme Court will hear additional cases that
could have further devastating effects on voting rights in our country. As you
read this, there are three voting rights lawsuits in federal court against the
state of Texas -- all filed just within the last 90 days.
Voting isn't just about winning elections. It's about our belief as a country
that all are worth hearing -- all are worth serving. When I think of Dr. King's
legacy, it's this belief coupled with a call to action to create the society we
know we can be.
Today, I’m reflecting on my own journey and how I’m fighting for the
opportunity to pursue a better life for everyone in Texas.
Thanks for standing with me on the side of justice in this time of challenge
and controversy.
