This Issue: Rep. Ed Case becomes first Democrat to cosponsor the Legal Workforce Act in a decade!

Hawaii Democrat, Rep. Ed Case, cosponsored H.R. 319, the Legal Workforce Act, this week. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) and would require most employers to use E-Verify within two years.
Rep. Case becomes the first Democrat to cosponsor the legislation since 2013 and only the sixth Democrat to ever cosponsor the bill. That group includes former Reps. Heath Shuler of North Carolina, Peter DeFazio of Oregon, Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania, Dan Boren of Oklahoma, and Jim Matheson of Utah.
The Legal Workforce Act is one of NumbersUSA's 6 Great Solutions, which also includes ending chain migration, ending the visa lottery, ending birthright citizenship, reducing foreign guest worker competition, and closing loopholes that encourage border surges. NumbersUSA believes that the simple action of requiring all employers to use E-Verify to check whether new hires are authorized to work in the United States is one action Congress can take to cut off the jobs magnet and deter illegal immigration.
In addition to the mandatory E-Verify requirement, it would increase the minimum fine for employers who knowingly hire illegal workers from $250 to $2500, and it would require the Social Security Administration to notify employers annually of any employees whose Social Security number has been used multiple times.
Rep. Case joins Republican Reps. Tom McClintock of California, Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, Troy Nehls of Texas, Chris Smith of New Jersey, Debbie Lesko of Arizona, Steve Womack of Arkansas, and John Carter of Texas as cosponsors.
Also this week, Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) cosponsored S. 156, the Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act, introduced by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).
Sen. Grassley's legislation would require all employers to use E-Verify within one year and increase fines for employers who knowingly hire illegal workers.
Sen. Britt joins Republican Sens. Tommy Tubberville of Alabama, Mike Lee of Utah, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, John Boozman of Arkansas, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, John Thune of South Dakota, and Joni Ernst of Iowa as cosponsors.
