Washington, D.C. — OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates released the following statement in regards to the next U.S. Secretary of Labor:
OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates supports the nomination of Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su to become the Secretary of Labor. Since 2000, there has not been any Secretary-level AANHPI official serving in the Presidential Cabinet. We believe it is vital that the Biden Administration reflects the diversity that is America. Appointing Julie Su to the position of Secretary of Labor will be a crucial step in an equitable representation of the AAPI community in the administration.
Ms. Su is more than qualified for the role and has demonstrated her capability as an effective Deputy Secretary. Her experience fighting for the rights of women workers as a groundbreaking civil rights attorney and serving as the Secretary of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency truly shows her commitment to the role. As Deputy Secretary of Labor, Ms. Su has expertly overseen and enforced state labor laws, combatting wage theft as a top priority and fighting for equal pay, especially for women of color who experience a racial and gender wage gap.
The nomination of Ms. Su will truly benefit American workers, and her expertise will allow the Biden Administration to effectively address labor concerns, especially those of vulnerable and disadvantaged workers.
