"The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state." - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dear Friend,
Last week, after investigations into serious allegations of moral and political corruption - abuses of power and obstruction of Congress - the U.S. House of Representatives sent the articles of impeachment against Donald John Trump to the U.S. Senate. The Senate has received the articles and now all senators and Chief Justice John Roberts have sworn an oath committing to "impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws." The Senate trial begins tomorrow, Tuesday, January 21.

While impeachment is often viewed as a purely political - or partisan - process, as Christians we must prioritize seeing impeachment through a moral and ethical lens, seeking the truth above all else. As Jesus said, "the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). Jesus directly connects truth with freedom and our freedom is now at stake in the need for truth-telling in the Senate trial. This must be a genuine trial and not just a political cover-up.
We at Sojourners believe there is sufficient evidence to create a moral imperative for removing the president from office. We also believe that all Americans, regardless of their current stance on the impeachment proceedings, must call for a fair, complete, and transparent trial that includes witnesses and any pertinent documents and evidence. Anything less would be a violation of the oath taken by members of the Senate. And without a fair trial, the Senate proceedings will become a historic sham.
In this moment of deep division and political peril, we are calling on senators to uphold their oath by seeking the truth, acting on the courage of their conscience, and protecting our democracy through an impartial trial. This is now a moral matter, not just a political one - and for Christians this is a test of faith.
