Last week, alongside several members of the NJDSC team, I had the distinct pleasure of traveling to the DNC’s Winter Meeting held in the City of Brotherly Love - Philadelphia. We attended meetings hosted by the various DNC Caucuses, like the Women’s and Black Caucuses, as well as the General Voting Session where we discussed and voted on modernizing the presidential primary election calendar in 2024. We heard remarks from Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chair Jamie Harrison, Vice President Kamala Harris, President Joe Biden and many others, spent time with Representatives Maxine Waters and Jim Clyburn, and enjoyed time getting to mingle and speak with Democrats from across the country who are all united in the common goal of creating a country that defends and fights for working and middle class people.

This week, Governor Murphy signed the Temporary Workers’ Bill of Rights [[link removed]] into law. The bill's "equal-pay-equal-benefit" provision requires that temporary workers be paid the same average compensation rate and benefits (or cash equivalent) that is paid to permanent employees. It offers additional compensation, benefits and protections for temporary workers, with the cost and burden of compliance placed on employers and staffing agencies that place temporary workers. The bill also prohibits pay deductions for meals and equipment that would reduce temporary workers’ pay below minimum wage.
“Our temporary workers, regardless of their race or status, are key contributors to the workforce in our state,” said Governor Murphy. [[link removed]] “Signing the Temporary Workers’ Bill of Rights establishes necessary guidelines for temporary help service firms and third-party clients to ensure that these workers are afforded basic protections and treated with the dignity they deserve.”
Temporary service firms will also be prohibited from restricting an employee from accepting another position with a permanent employer or a third-party client. The bill also forbids temporary help service firms or third-party clients from retaliating against any temporary worker by firing them or treating them unfairly in any other way for exercising their legal rights. I am grateful for Governor Murphy’s consistency in protecting New Jersey workers from the abuses of unpaid wages, unsafe working conditions, and other forms of mistreatment.

Throughout the month of February, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee is continuing to celebrate Black History Month with a weekly spotlight of Black leaders throughout the state and nation that are continuing to do the work of making America a more equitable place for ALL. This week we are proud to be spotlighting our Veterans Caucus Chair, Debbie Hamilton-Clax.

As a little girl growing up in Brooklyn, Debbie dreamed of doing exciting things that were different from the norm. After graduating Dobbs Ferry HS, Debbie went to college for one year then enlisted in the US Navy as a cryptologist. During her enlistment, Debbie supported her recon squadron during Operation Desert Storm. Motherhood guided her decision to leave the Navy but once her youngest child enlisted in the US Marines, Debbie went back to school and earned her degree in computer security. Because Debbie missed serving her country, she began volunteering with domestic abuse and sexual assault survivors. This prompted her to volunteer as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), something she continues to do. After joining her local American Legion post, Debbie began volunteering and was trained as the post service officer. Last year, Debbie became the NJ Director of the DNC Veterans and Military Council and the Chair of the NJDSC Veterans Caucus, where she works to mobilize voters around issues concerning New Jersey’s veterans community. Debbie is still continuing her education at Rutgers, majoring in Public Policy.

On Tuesday night President Joe Biden gave his second State of the Union address since taking office. The President spoke directly to the American people to outline the historic progress that has been made over the past two years to grow the economy from the bottom up and middle out, and to reaffirm his agenda for the future.
Thanks to President Biden and New Jersey Democrats in Washington and Trenton, the state of our union is STRONG. From the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that is modernizing our country, to the Inflation Reduction Act capping seniors’ insulin at $35 a month and tackling the climate crisis, to the CHIPS and Science Act that is reinvigorating Made in America manufacturing, Democrats are creating good-paying jobs across the country that are going to help us compete with the rest of the world. The Biden Administration is taking on Wall Street by finally making the largest corporations and wealthiest Americans begin to pay their fair share without cutting Social Security or Medicare and putting more money in the pockets of working families.
The past two years have seen historic job growth, unemployment reaching a historic 53 year low, falling inflation, higher wages, and record investments coming back to America. President Biden’s vision is creating jobs, rebuilding our infrastructure, lowering costs for families, tackling climate change, investing in our future and delivering for families too often left behind. Now, as the President said on Tuesday, we just need to finish the job to improve the standard of living in people’s everyday lives and keep communities safe by continuing to invest in America in a fiscally responsible way that reduces the deficit. I applaud President Biden’s commitment to rebuilding the middle class, uniting the country, and making sure every American - regardless of race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, zip code, or financial status - has equal access to participate in the American democracy and economy.
