The 2022 political cycle was the most expensive midterm election on record. The spending spree is being driven mainly by billionaires and wealthy special interests dropping absurd amounts of money to sway elections. And thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United thirteen years ago that opened the floodgates to unlimited political contributions, we can expect spending to continue escalating unless we stop it.
All of that big-donor cash is perverting our political system. Billionaires spend big to prop up their chosen candidates and push their own agendas. This leads to HUGE sways in our elections and strips the power of voting from the American people – entirely undemocratic.
As running for political office increasingly becomes a rich person’s game, the government will become even more inattentive to the needs of everyday Americans. Congress can stop this now! They can restore democracy and give power back to the voters by passing a constitutional amendment that would overturn Citizens United.
