February is Black History Month. This time of celebration of Black history and culture comes on the heels of the painful and traumatic murder of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police and medics.

In this time of loss, trauma, and soul searching, I will find ways all month to educate myself and my children on the achievements of Black Americans in science, art, politics, education, and more.

As a mama, I will have tough, honest conversations with my three young children about racial inequity and the history of voting rights in this country.

And in my role as the Founder and CEO of Vote Mama, I will uplift Black mamas in leadership like State Senator Jennifer McClellan, who recently became the Democratic nominee for Virginia’s 4th Congressional District.

Throughout Virginia’s over 400-year history, the state has never sent a Black woman to Congress. In her special election on February 21, Senator McClellan is going to shatter that ceiling.

This will not be the first “first” for Sen. McClellan. In 2010, she became the first member of the House of Delegates to serve the Commonwealth while pregnant.

Senator McClellan knows first hand the pressures that mamas face when running for office and in the workplace, which motivates her fight for gender equality for all Virginians.

From growing up with parents engaged in civil rights activism to serving as Vice Chair of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, Sen. McClellan has a lifelong track record of fighting for racial equity and voting rights.

My team and I are proud to support Sen. McClellan and mamas like her as they fight for more “firsts", -- and we won’t stop until Congress truly reflects our diverse communities. But we can't do it without you.
