Legislative Update

Southland One Act
News from St. Paul

This week has seen several consequential bills moving through committees, including one that has huge implications for our teacher licensure process. HF 1269, the Governor's education policy bill, was presented in committee this week and would gut our tiered teacher licensure pathways, making it harder for teachers in the lower tiers move up to higher tiers. This is especially disappointing because many of the teachers who use the experience pathways being eliminated are teachers of color, who are desperately needed in our classrooms.

The bill also changes licensure requirements, by removing the pedagogy and content exam. While we do not have to use a paper-pencil test, we do need an independent mechanism for a standard of licensure, like many other professions. With many students still falling behind from pandemic school closures, and the largest achievement gap in the nation, we need to make sure teachers are equipped to meet the needs of our students in the classroom.

Last weekend, the Southland One Act Play took first place and is on their way to the state tournament! Way to go, Southland One Act team! (photo above)

Last Wednesday, I attended the Outstanding Educator Awards presented by STEM Forward this week. I am so proud of our local teachers.  Out of the 13 nominees for Outstanding Educator, three of those nominees came from our community! Jessica Stanley, Ryan Stanley, and Lisa Lage each earned a nomination, and I had a great time celebrating their hard work and dedication to our local students!
