John, when you hear the phrase “food desert,” what do you think of?
If an uninhabited wasteland with zero food available comes to mind, think again.
The landscape of a food desert may contain thousands of people, and plenty of ultra-processed, sugary, high-sodium products, but healthy, nutritious food is scarce or unaffordable.
Diet-related diseases are rising at a stunning rate. As a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I’m not just taking public action, like calling on people to join my sugar-free diet from July 4th to Labor Day.
I’m also implementing policy to address the health crisis our nation is facing — one that has to do with the food we eat.
I’m pushing to include prescriptions for fresh produce — Food as Medicine — that are included in Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans Administration coverage in the Senate Agriculture Committee’s Farm Bill, in addition to stricter FDA rules about package labeling and nutrition.
John, add your name if you agree the Senate should take action to address chronic diet-related diseases by improving access to fresh produce and other healthy foods. [[link removed]]

Over 10% of Americans have diabetes. Roughly the same percentage of folks have experienced food insecurity at some point, meaning they either weren’t able to find or afford quality foods for their household.
It’s clear that food deserts are a main contributing factor to these growing issues. If families aren’t able to provide their children with healthy meals comprised of fruits and vegetables, they’re more at risk of suffering from chronic health issues. That’s also why I’m continuing to push for the reinstatement of the expanded Child Tax Credit — to bring hunger rates back down and ensure every child has nutritious meals.
No one in America, no matter their zip code or income, should have to worry about finding and affording quality meals for their kids.
Food As Medicine will allow doctors and medical professionals to prescribe healthy foods as benefits of federal programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration.
Add your name to my petition today if you agree we need to take action on nutrition in the 2023 Farm Bill. [[link removed]]

Everything I do as part of my work is to better the lives of everyday working families. That’s why reducing hunger, improving nutrition, and tackling the issues affecting our food industry are so important to me.
Thank you for using your voice to uplift this crucial issue.
With love and gratitude,
