Why do Western countries allow Islamic states
to continually attack Israel?
10 February 2023
While the attention of the whole world seems to be focused on whether or not the new government under Bibi Netanyahu is eroding democracy within Israel, there is a phenomenon that does not make the headlines, but which is gradually eroding the security and perhaps even the very existence of the Jewish State of Israel.
It’s the ongoing, relentless attack on Israel in the United Nations.
Israel is the only state within the United Nations that is denied political independence and territorial inviolability – the two pillars of sovereign equality, which is one of the founding principles of the United Nations.
The deliberate isolation and demonization of Israel makes a mockery of the UN system that was established after WWII to ensure global peace and security, based on the independence of nations and the sovereign equality of states.
This attack is being led by the political leaders of the Islamic world.
Politically, the Islamic world is represented by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The OIC has 57 member states, making it the world's largest intergovernmental organisation outside the UN. Alongside the Vatican and Palestine, the OIC is an Observer in the UN, which means it can participate in most meetings of UN organs. Month after month, year in year out, the OIC prepares and submits resolutions to the myriad of organs and institutions within the United Nations complex, that effectively deny Israel the right to exist as a sovereign, independent state.
As Bassim Tawil wrote in a recent article: “The OIC presumptuously calls itself ‘The Collective Voice of The Muslim World,’ and simple observation of its activities would seem to place it as Islam's political Caliphate. One would wonder, then, how such a single-interest organization could lay claim to such a disproportionate amount of the UN's attention, which presumably should represent the interests of the global citizenry.
The reason is that most non-Islamic countries are either too afraid or too self-interested to disagree with the OIC's anti-Israel machinations.
Within the UN system, Western nations are gathered in the group called "Western European and Other States Group (WEOG)". WEOG has only 28 member states. The group of Islamic countries is thus almost twice as big as the group of Western countries. And OIC states possess a disproportionate amount of the world's fossil fuel energy resources.
Tragically, many European and other "Western" states are very weak when it comes to defending Israel's sovereignty in the UN. Instead of objecting to OIC's anti-Israel resolutions, oftimes Western states either concur or abstain from voting. Western countries are afraid of opposing the ideologically-driven agenda of the Islamic states, lest they suffer economic consequences.
Another factor is that the Vatican's hostility towards Israeli sovereignty influences many Catholic-dominated countries, such as in South America. The result is that the Islamic states, even though they are not a majority within the UN, inevitably manage to garner a majority of votes for their campaigns to undermine Israel.
Surely it is time for the West to stand up for Judeo-Christian values, and defend the right of the Jewish people to a secure homeland, and of the Jewish State of Israel to sovereignty. After all, Israel is the only country that – for all its shortcomings – remains (and is likely to remain for the time being) a bastion of Western values, such as freedom and protection of civil rights, in the Middle East and northern Africa.
Whether one agrees with them or not, the reforms currently being proposed by the Netanyahu government do not alter that fact.
