The One-Minute Meeting

Workers are saying loudly they are overloaded with useless meetings. They told researchers that a third of the meetings they attend each week are not critical. Eight out of 10 say they attend meetings they are invited to because, well, it seems to be expected of them. But when they attend non-critical meetings, the workers say they have a lot of ways to multitask or just ignore the conversation. Still, few of their bosses are talking about scheduling fewer meetings. But I will tell you about one company that did. It ordered a calendar purge. I feel an insurrection coming on.

Do you know what I mean when I mention “Zoom fatigue?” It turns out that researchers know why online meetings zap your energy more than in-person meetings. Online meetings take more brain processing power to stay engaged. The researchers found that “due to high levels of sustained concentration fatigue begins to set in 30-40 minutes into a meeting. Looking at days filled with video meetings, stress begins to set in at about two hours into the day.” Maybe you can set up a meeting with your boss to discuss this study. Hold it online just for punishment.

Bank savings accounts are starting to pay real interest, not the fraction of a percentage that they have paid for years. Online banks are advertising 4% or even higher interest rates and are making it easy to open accounts, in many cases with no minimum deposits. Many of these banks are big institutions with names you will know, though some are not. Be careful to scout out user comments about how easy it is to move your money and whether their websites are easy to use.
