John,
One leak from the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) could poison the water of Africa’s largest lake that 40 million people depend on for food, farming and their livelihoods.
This is an unmitigated environmental disaster.
Relentless mobilization from Ekō members, activists and communities on the frontline has forced a total of 22 companies to stop insuring this devastating project. This is great news- without insurance, no pipeline!
But on our list, US insurers Liberty Mutual, Chubb, Travelers and AIG are still lagging behind.
And that could change quickly: our partners just filed a formal complaint against the lead US insurance broker on the project, Marsh. Not only is this historic, but it is already putting the other US insurers in panic mode.
This is our moment to put pressure on these insurers and show them people around the world won't back down until they drop EACOP once and for all:
Tell Liberty Mutual, Chubb, Travelers and AIG to drop EACOP and insure our future instead!
TotalEnergies’ destructive pipeline has already displaced tens of thousands of people and if built would endanger water resources for millions of people and wildlife, like elephants, giraffes, lions and leopards. We can’t let oil giant TotalEnergies and its insurers get away with destroying livelihoods and our future.
Up until now, insurers have largely been able to rake in record profits and avoid being held accountable for their role in enabling destruction. This complaint changes that. Insurer Marsh is being directly called out for its critical role in enabling human rights and environmental violations through insuring the EACOP. No more hiding in the shadows. You, John, can help call out the other insurers lagging behind and bring them into the light.
A powerful network of over 260 organizations are working relentlessly to convince insurers around the world to rule out supporting this disastrous project. And we are nearly there.
Thousands of Ekō members like you mass emailed one of the biggest supporters of the project, Munich Re, and got them to pull out. This has set a precedent and 5 other insurers have since backed out. Let’s keep applying pressure and make sure this climate wrecking project never sees the light of the day.
Tell Liberty Mutual, Chubb, Travelers and AIG to rule out insuring this disastrous project!
