Dear John,
At Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, Republicans heckled President Biden when he called them out for attacking Social Security, insisting that they would never ever do such a thing.
Do not believe them.
The very same MAGA Republicans who were shouting “liar” at the president have wanted to cut Social Security for years. They deny it because it’s wildly unpopular.
Instead, their strategy is to use the debt ceiling to force President Biden into negotiations over cuts to Social Security and Medicare — and then if he gives in, Democrats will share the blame.
The scary thing is that some Democrats seem to be falling for it. Joe Manchin, who is the lead sponsor of a bill to create an “independent commission” to recommend cuts to Social Security, is already negotiating behind closed doors with Kevin McCarthy.
It’s up to us to sound the alarm and make sure the American people know what’s really going on. That’s why Inequality Media has launched a series of viral videos, explainers, and other content that we are spreading across the millions who follow us on social media. However, in order to run this effort at a large enough scale to win, we’re counting on supporters like you to chip in.
Will you make a donation to help alert the public and stop Republicans from using the debt ceiling to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare?
Let’s check the record.
Mike Lee, one of the loudest hecklers at the State of the Union Address, declared as a candidate that, “It will be my objective to phase out Social Security — to pull it up by the roots and get rid of it.”
Rick Scott, the head of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee, put it in writing in his 2022 campaign manifesto, in which he proposed automatically sunsetting Social Security and Medicare every five years.
The Republican Study Committee released a proposal last year calling for the retirement age to be raised to 70, for means-testing Social Security benefits, and for partially privatizing Social Security.
But even if you ignore everything they’ve said in the past about cutting Social Security, the math says that it’s simply not possible to achieve the deficit reductions they want without either: 1. raising taxes (which they say they won’t do), 2. cutting defense spending (which they also say they won’t do), or 3. cutting Social Security and Medicare.
Which do you think they will choose?
We clearly can’t count on the corporate media to explain to the American people what’s going on. They’ve botched their coverage of the debt ceiling for decades.
So that’s why Inequality Media is running a major effort across all our platforms to educate the public about the debt ceiling and communicate the facts they aren't hearing from the media.
This is a fight that Inequality Media was made for, but we need your help to ramp up our campaign right now. Will you donate to help get the truth out and stop the Republican attacks on Social Security and Medicare?
Thanks for all you do.
