As the search for survivors of Monday’s devastating twin earthquakes in southeast Turkey (officially renamed Türkiye) and northwestern Syria continues into its fourth day, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams in Syria are racing against the clock to provide desperately needed emergency aid to thousands of people.
As temperatures in the region reach near freezing, we are particularly concerned for those without shelter. Thousands of houses and buildings have been destroyed and many people are sleeping outside or in cars due to the fear of further aftershocks. With needs rising by the hour, we can’t afford to waste a single moment.
Since Monday, we have coordinated with local health authorities to expand treatment capacity in the facilities we support and provide lifesaving care to more than 3,465 injured patients. As another part of our initial response, we distributed food and blankets to more than 500 families in Afrin in collaboration with local partners. We have also distributed over 450 relief kits in the Jinderis area, which could be the worst affected region. We also provided 2,500 blankets, plastic sheeting, and 100 winter kits in Idlib city. We are initiating psychological first-aid activities in the facilities we’re supporting and across mobile clinics.
But needs continue to evolve with time, especially considering the compounding crises that already existed in Syria before the earthquakes struck.
“For Syrians living in the earthquake zone, this is a catastrophe layered on top of crisis after crisis,” says Avril Benoît, executive director of MSF-USA. “People have endured more than a decade of war, an economic crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a recent cholera outbreak.”
The massive consequences of this disaster will require an equally massive international aid effort. , will you stand with us? Your unrestricted support allows MSF teams in Syria and more than 70 other countries to provide care where it is needed most—and they cannot do it alone.
