John,

Today is a day for reflection on the incredible legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — whose civil rights movement stirred the conscience of our nation. While we have made incredible strides thanks to the work of Dr. King, there is clearly still much to be done to make his dream for our country a reality.

One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King encourages us to find hope while confronting the challenging work of progress. He says, "Even in the inevitable moments when all seems hopeless, men know that without hope they cannot really live, and in agonizing desperation, they cry for the bread of hope."

To honor Dr. King’s legacy, we must confront our country’s challenges through the lens of hope. That’s why, despite the political noise, I still believe in our ability to open the doors of opportunity wide for all people. I still believe there are tangible things we can accomplish — from restoring the Voting Rights Act, to investing in educational opportunities, to raising the minimum wage — that will push Dr. King’s dream forward.

Thank you for keeping up the hope, John. And thank you for joining me in honoring Dr. King on this important day.

Yours,
Matt
