Among the attention this important new book is garnering, renowned economist and author Paul Craig Roberts ([link removed]) recently reviewed Independent Institute’s In Search of Monsters to Destroy: The Folly of American Empire and the Paths to Peace.

Known best for his appointment as President Ronald Reagan’s Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy, Roberts’ contributions to supply-side economic policy are legendary, earning him the Treasury Department’s Meritorious Service Award for “outstanding contributions to the formulation of United States economic Policy.” Presently, Roberts is the John M. Olin fellow at the Institute of Political Economy and was formerly a senior research fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University.

Paul Craig Roberts’s critique of American foreign policy has proven just as vital as his economic insight. Rejecting a left-right political paradigm, Roberts has been a consistent voice of courage and reason on American foreign policy. That is why his review of In Search of Monsters to Destroy deserves special attention.
Titled “Can the American Leviathan Be Tamed?,” ([link removed]) Roberts writes in his review:

Founding Fathers warned against going abroad in search of monsters to destroy. When Washington takes its wars, slogans, and coups abroad, generations of writers have characterized the aggression as seeking monsters to destroy. Washington has benefitted from the cover offered by the slogan, justifying mayhem inflicted on the world as overthrowing dictators and bringing democracy.

In his just published book, In Search of Monsters to Destroy (Independent Institute, 2022), Christopher J. Coyne, Independent Institute Fellow and economics professor at George Mason University, takes these claims at face value. He demonstrates conclusively that Washington’s 21st century attempts to establish liberal political regimes in the Middle East totally failed, the reason being that illiberal means can lead only to illiberal ends....

All in all Coyne does a good job, as we have become accustomed to the Independent Institute and its associated scholars to do, in demonstrating that Washington has the wrong model of involvement and is doing harm rather than good.

In Search of Monsters to Destroy was also recently featured on Book Club with Jeffrey Sachs ([link removed]) , a podcast hosted by world-renowned economist and Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs. The show features lively conversations with the authors of scintillating, inspiring, and remarkably important books about history, social justice, and the challenges of building a decent world.

Together, Sachs and Coyne discuss American imperialism and militaristic culture around the world, proving that nonviolent approaches to domestic and international conflicts not only minimize violence but also promote cultures of peace throughout the world.

This eye-opening examination on whether interventionist methods should ever have a place in foreign policy is a must-listen.

The Cato Daily Podcast ([link removed]) invited Coyne to discuss his book’s implications for American foreign policy today. Can we resist the siren song of empire without completely disengaging from the world at large?

In this conversation, Coyne insists he is no isolationist. With clarity and courage, he explains that there are workable, proven alternatives to imperialism, militarism, and empire—ones that preserve freedom, promote security, and foster mutually enriching friendship among the nations of the earth. Wishing the United States were less of a global hegemon doesn't mean giving up on engagement with the globe!

The conversation was illuminating and inspiring.

Praise for In Search of Monsters to Destroy

[link removed]“With In Search of Monsters to Destroy, Christopher Coyne offers readers a crisp, concise, and devastating indictment of American imperialism. His provocative proposal for a nonviolent ‘polycentric’ approach to national security comes as a welcome bonus.”
—Andrew J. Bacevich, President and Chairman of the Board, Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft; Professor Emeritus of International Relations and History, Boston University

“Why go overseas to slay monsters? Whether it’s corruption and cronyism, bureaucratic pathologies and perverse policies, mechanized terror and murderous militarism, the monsters are right here, America. Luckily for us, in In Search of Monsters to Destroy, Coyne faces them down with courage and clarity. So should we.”
—William J. Astore, Lt. Col., USAF (Ret.), author, Hindenburg: Icon of German Militarism

“Christopher Coyne has long been the leading voice in economics on the folly of American military interventions overseas. In his remarkable new book, In Search of Monsters to Destroy, he gives unpopular but deeply compelling arguments why such interventions are a threat to liberal values both at home and abroad.”
—William R. Easterly, Co-Director, Development Research Institute, New York University
