For almost four decades, gerrymandered maps helped Republicans hold on to power in Michigan state government. They used their influence to restrict workers’ rights, undermine abortion access, and more.

But now, with control of the governorship, state House, and state Senate, Michigan Democrats have the power to pass legislation on key progressive priorities for the first time in a generation. And the NDRC’s work helped make this possible!

● In 2018, the NDRC supported the creation of Michigan’s independent redistricting commission – a reform approved by voters to make map drawing fair and nonpartisan.

● In 2021, the commission approved new districts that according to The New York Times is “one of the fairest” maps in the country. Rather than favoring one party over the other, the new maps were designed to favor the winner of Michigan’s statewide vote.

● In 2022, the NDRC supported Democracy Defenders running across Michigan – and these candidates were able to compete on fair maps. Thanks to the help of this grassroots team, many of them won.
