People for the American Way

SIGN THE PETITION

PFAW Member,

Today as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we recognize how far we still need to go to fulfill his visions of social and economic justice. The civil rights he fought to secure for all communities are under threat today, but we remain committed to protecting, defending and advancing those rights until we achieve our vision of justice for all.

Perhaps one of the most important rights among them, voting rights, have been under attack by Republicans for decades.

Sign the petition now demanding that the senate pass legislation that would strengthen voting rights!>>

All across the country we continue to witness voter suppression. We see it in voter roll purges, voter ID requirements, gerrymandering, the narrowing of voting hours, and the outright closure of polling locations in some communities. These injustices are often painted as attempts to "reduce voter fraud" but in reality are nothing more than deliberate attempts to keep voters, particularly voters from communities of color away from the voting booth.

As recently as the 2018 midterm elections, 53,000 voter registrations were put on hold in Georgia, nearly 70 percent of which belonged to black voters, and North Carolina’s 2018 midterm election had nearly 20% fewer early voting locations than there were in 2014.

And make no mistake, as Republicans continue to scheme ahead of the 2020 election, they will be doing everything they can to further disenfranchise voters, which only underscores the desperately needed reforms that a bill before the Senate would provide - the Voting Rights Advancement Act.

The VRAA would establish new ways to determine which states and localities must get clearance from the Department of Justice before making changes to their election laws and procedures.

We must ensure protection for every citizen’s right to vote. We cannot let voting rights be eroded any further.

Thanks,

-- Zach, PFAW
