Join Me Monday For My Town Hall in Elgin and My Community Project Funding Event in South Elgin

With the new year and new Congress now fully underway, I want to invite you to join me for my first town hall of 2023 to discuss the priorities I should tackle in the 118^th Congress on behalf of Illinois’ Eighth Congressional District. I’ll be holding my town hall in the ABC Room on the first floor of the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin on Monday at 6:00pm. You can sign up to join me here. I look forward to seeing you there.

I also would like to invite you and your family to an event at the Gail Borden Public Library’s South Elgin Branch at 10:00am on Monday to celebrate the more than $2.3 million in federal funding I secured for the library’s expansion. The expansion project, which will create a new space for children and families, will also allow additional meetings and programming events to be hosted at the South Elgin branch. This event is open to the public and does not require any RSVPs. I hope to see you there.

The Threats Posed by the CCP and Its Surveillance Balloons

Last week, the United States discovered a high-altitude surveillance balloon, operated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), flying over U.S. airspace in Montana, a brazen violation of American sovereignty that will not be tolerated. I was glad to see the Biden Administration move purposefully and methodically in determining the safest and most effective way to down the balloon without putting civilian lives in danger. The CCP’s actions show that the regime is not fully onboard with a substantive change in policy despite recent diplomatic overtures, and that the CCP still poses an active threat to the United States and our allies. As Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the CCP, I look forward to working with my colleagues in both parties to ensure our country is prepared to handle threats like these, along with others that are presented by the CCP, in the future.

The State of the Union

On Tuesday night, President Joe Biden addressed the nation during the annual State of the Union, sharing a message of unity and progress while touting a desire to “finish the job” in this next session of Congress. I was honored to attend the State of the Union with Rushan Abbas, Founder and Executive Director of Campaign for Uyghurs, as my guest. Rushan, one of the most outspoken advocates for Uyghur human rights in the world, saw her sister, Gulshan, be wrongfully detained by the CCP in 2018 as punishment for Rushan’s political activism in the United States. Rushan’s organization, Campaign for Uyghurs, was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in February 2022 for its work in advocating for human rights and democratic freedoms for Uyghurs. I look forward to working with Rushan in the future to call attention to the human rights violations being committed by the CCP against the Uyghur Muslim population, and will continue to fight against the discrimination and persecution of religious minorities around the world.
