In Tuesday night’s State of the Union, President Biden laid out his agenda to build an economy that works for everyone.

He called on Congress to pass a billionaire tax, because no billionaire should pay a lower tax rate than a teacher or firefighter. He spoke about closing loopholes that allow ultra wealthy companies to avoid paying taxes. And he called for the passage of the PRO Act , a bill that I proudly co-sponsored, which would protect workers’ right to unionize and collectively bargain for fairer wages, better benefits, and safer workplaces.

I was proud to hear the president’s support for progressive economic legislation that my colleagues and I are fighting for every day in the halls of Congress. But the reality is that Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell are going to fight against every single one of these proposals.

The Republican House majority is mostly interested in consolidating political power for themselves, not working together to advance the overwhelmingly popular agenda that President Biden spoke about in his State of the Union speech.

That’s why it’s so important we protect and strengthen our Senate majority and take back the House next year. In my role as Vice-Chair of the Senate Democrats’ campaign committee, I’m working with Senators across the country who are gearing up for tough fights ahead. But organizing and building up a strong campaign takes resources and early investment, so I’m counting on this team to power our work.
