John –

Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King once said, “Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

As a teacher, I wanted to instill in my students that no matter who you are or how little you have, everyone has the ability and capacity to serve. Whether it was volunteering with the American Cancer Society or building houses with Habitat for Humanity, I tried to model Dr. King’s message of service. Today, it is my honor and privilege to serve you in Congress.

On this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, use your voice. Figure out what your mission is – no matter how big or how small – and use it to impact your community.

Let’s all continue to ensure his legacy lives on.
