The State of our Union
President Biden and Leader Jeffries prior to the State of the Union
Dear Neighbor,
On Tuesday night President Biden delivered his State of the Union Address. He delivered a compelling speech outlining a vision to make life better for everyday Americans.
Economic growth is up, inflation is down and over 12 million new jobs have been created. This is a record in modern American history.
President Biden's economic agenda is working, and we remain committed to addressing the kitchen-table issues that affect you in your day-to-day life back home in Brooklyn. His dignity was a stark contrast to the right-wing extremists who are unfit to serve and are plotting to cut Social Security, destroy Medicare and impose a 30% national sales tax.
When President Biden took office, he inherited a nation in the midst of a deadly pandemic and an economic crisis. Now, just two years later, we are experiencing record-low unemployment coupled with strong and steady economic growth.
Gwen Carr, Leader Jeffries and Eustene Corbin
I was honored to bring both Eustene Corbin of East New York and Gwen Carr of Staten Island to the Capitol to watch the address.
Like many seniors in our community, Ms. Corbin counts on Social Security and Medicare, and I invited her to hear how under President Joe Biden’s leadership, Democrats will always defend these programs against Extreme MAGA Republican plots to destroy them. President Biden was clear that we will not cut Social Security and we will not cut Medicare. Not now, not ever.
Leader Jeffries on the Floor of the House of Representatives at the State of the Union
I was also joined by Gwen Carr for the speech. As many of you may recall, Ms. Carr is the mother of the late Eric Garner who was killed by the illegal use of a police chokehold in 2014. She is an unyielding force in the struggle for justice who carries the torch for her son and spends her time fighting to make the use of police chokeholds illegal nationwide.
In 2015 I worked with Ms. Carr on the Excessive Use of Force Prevention Act in honor of her son. It was later included in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and served as the basis for the provision in President Biden's 2022 executive order banning the use of chokeholds and carotid restraints by federal law enforcement officers.
President Biden and House Dems will continue to deliver big results for everyday Americans. And we’re just getting started.
