Dear Friend,

Happy Martin Luther King Day!

On this day we honor and remember the legacy of Dr. King and the movement he led dedicated to ensuring that all Americans can have a voice in our democracy. As we reflect on that legacy let us rededicate ourselves to the fight for equality and justice so central to his life's work. . As the representative of Alabama's Civil Rights District, where many of the pivotal events of the civil rights movement occurred, I take seriously my responsibility to not only to advocate on behalf of those living in my district, but to also protect and further the legacy of the freedom fighters like Dr. King and so many others, known and unknown.

That's why there is no seminal piece of legislation than H.R. 4- the Voting Rights Advancement Act that will restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. While its passage in the House was a significant victory, Mitch McConnell's unwillingness to take up the bill in the Senate strikes a fatal blow! And so our work continues!!

Dr. King said, “Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”

While we remember and our rededicate ourselves to Dr. King's legacy, let us unite and recommit ourselves to keeping the pressure on Washington to have H.R. 4 signed into law!! We honor Dr. King by our actions, not just our words. Our vote is our voice! Let's restore the Voting Rights Act and ensure that every American's voice is heard!!

Keep the faith!

All the best,
