70 years ago this month, following World War II, leaders from around the world came together in London and agreed to cancel Germany’s debt.
This act significantly contributed to the growth of the broken post-war German economy and helped the country rebuild.
Countries that agreed to cancel Germany’s debt included Pakistan, Zambia, Sri Lanka –countries that today are in a debt crisis of their own.
And this isn’t the only time debts have been cancelled, in the 2000's we won $130bn of debt cancellation for lower income countries. Thousands of us campaigned and demanded justice – and won.
If Germany’s debt can be cancelled 70 years ago, world leaders must agree debt cancellation for countries that need it today.
Join our Executive Director Heidi Chow, and three amazing speakers as they take us on a journey from how the debt was cancelled, to why we need to fight for debt cancellation now.
-
Kristina Rehbein – From our sister organisation Jubilee Germany, will speak about Germany's historic debt cancellation, and other key moments in the 20th century where campaigners have fought for debt justice
-
Jayati Ghosh – Economics professor and public intellectual will talk about the current situation with the global economy, especially in the global south, and why now is a key moment for debt cancellation
- Sunny Morgan – Climate activist from South Africa will tell us about countries on the front line of the climate crisis, currently in debt, and why British colonialism has to be part of the conversation.
This event takes place in solidarity with actions demanding debt cancellation taking place in Germany, Zambia and Uganda on the 27th of February anniversary
