Common Cause NC Fighting Gerrymandering with January 31 Events

Chubby Checker became Billboard's Number One Recording Artist of All Time as he gave birth to the Twist dance craze in the '60s. This month Checker will highlight a "Twist the Night Away Gala" as Common Cause NC brings him to Wilmington as part of the group's campaign against gerrymandering. Traditionally legislative districts have been drawn by whichever party dominates the state's government, and Republicans have used their statehouse advantage to dilute Democratic voting power and elect more Republicans. Common Cause says North Carolina needs a redistricting process that is "transparent, fair, impartial and non-partisan." Such a system, Common Cause says, will make elections more fair and decrease bitter partisan divisions in government.

The evening Chubby Checker Gala at the Blockade Runner will feature entertainment from  Broadway Star NaTasha Williams (Waitress & Chicago), 1st Runner Up & Talent Winner Miss NC 2019 JeRenae Raeford, and Award Winning Actress & Vocalist Elisa Smith in addition to the Twist star. Earlier in the day there will be an "End Gerrymandering Now" event at the Dennis Hopper apartment in historic downtown Wilmington. For information and tickets to the Gala click here. Tickets for the afternoon event downtown are available here. For more information on the Common Cause NC anti-gerrymandering campaign, click here.

Will Tillis Betray Us Again on Funding for Trump's Wall?

(From NCDP) In an epic flip flop last year North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis meekly accepted President Trump's plan to snatch $80 million slated for military facilities in North Carolina to divert money to Trumps' ridiculous border wall. At first Tillis opposed Trump on snatching the money as "an emergency," but Tillis quickly backed down. That decision - which Tillis tried to wave away as a “short term distraction” - has dogged him for a year, and thanks to Trump, will continue to dog him until November.

Now Tillis has spent all of last week being silent about the White House’s brand new plan to raid another $7.2 billion from military construction projects across the country. His humiliating flip flop last year earned him several “end of 2019” awards -- including “one of the best opeds” from the Washington Post, which called Tillis’ flip flop “the kind of distilled proof one rarely gets in the real world of how the Republican Party has abandoned principle for expediency and political survival in the Trump era.”

Will Tillis stand up and protect his state this time? Don't hold your breath waiting for that.

Important NHCDP Meeting Monday January 27th

We need a quorum at our Monthly Meeting On January 27 to elect two new SEC members. This is important in this presidential election year because the SEC votes to elect delegates to the Democratic National Convention, among other things.  Accordingly, if you are a Precinct Chair, Precinct Vice Chair or SEC member, it is important for you to attend so we have a quorum for the vote.  If you cannot attend, you can send a proxy with a written statement from you that they are authorized to vote your proxy. See time and place details below.

DOING (Democrats Organizing In Neighborhood Groups) Gears Up for 2020

Democratic activists plan to make a difference in 2020. Rather than waiting for national campaigns to organize our county, they have developed the DOING model. The goal of DOING is to establish ongoing contact with as many Democratic voters as we can. People in each precinct can work together to build community and mobilize Democrats in their local area.

Here is a list of canvasses, which will be updated as new canvasses are added.
