Over the next three months, thousands of volunteer AFSP Advocates will meet with state legislators across the country as part of AFSP State Capitol Day events. These annual events are an opportunity for volunteer Advocates to change the suicide prevention landscape by raising awareness about life-saving policies and legislation, while also sharing their personal experiences and connections to the cause.

Community and collaboration are key elements of impacting change, which is why the State Capitol Day events are so important. At these events, volunteers establish connections with lawmakers that pave the way for policy progress. In particular, AFSP is eager to increase state funding to support the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. While the new three-digit dialing code has widely expanded the Lifeline's reach, local crisis centers now find themselves lacking sufficient resources to meet surging demand.

At this year's State Capitol Day events, AFSP Advocates will educate lawmakers about 988's urgent need for support, as well as current public policy priorities like advancing Project 2025, implementing architectural barriers, and protections and services for the LGBTQ community and others at increased risk for suicidal behavior.

You can make a difference, too. We hope you’ll join us for a 2022 State Capitol Day event in your state.
