John,
This Black History Month, I want to take a moment to celebrate and uplift the stories of the generations of Black Americans who have advanced our country, contributed to our communities, and shaped our culture.
This month, and every month, should serve as a reminder that Black history is American history. Because the Black American story is deeply – and inseparably – woven into the fabric of our nation itself.
Our centuries-long fight for civil rights, equity, and freedom is central to this ever-evolving story of our history. And while this fight for equal opportunity is far from over, I want to honor the Black leaders who opened doors that were previously closed, shattered glass ceilings, and proved the breadth and boundlessness of Black excellence.
To every Black leader, artist, entrepreneur, and revolutionary who has helped make this nation a better place: Thank you.
And finally, as the first Black person ever elected to serve Ohio’s 13th District, I would be remiss to not mention trailblazers like Shirley Chisholm and Stephanie Tubbs Jones who paved the way for women like me. I strive to carry on your legacy, fighting for equity, justice, and representation, in the Halls of Congress.
In celebration and solidarity: Happy Black History Month.
