IT'S BEEN 36 YEARS SINCE OUR FIGHT TO DEFEND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
BEGAN

This week, we celebrate our 36th birthday. Since 1987, ARTICLE 19 has
worked to help build a world where all people can express themselves
freely.

Throughout the years we have challenged attacks against freedom of
expression, advocating good governance and supporting civil society in its
efforts to ensure open, respectful and informed debate can flourish.

We defend expression for all. And when you donate to us, you’re helping
to build a freer, fairer world.

TACKLING HATE SPEECH

ARTICLE 19 has led a range of law and policy measures to counter speech
that incites violence or poses a risk to people’s safety ’. In 2015 we
launched _Hate Speech Explained: A Toolkit,_ a guide on how to identify and
counter hate speech while protecting freedom of expression and equality.

FREEDOM TO KNOW

We help to set the standards for freedom of expression with a range of
publications – from 1999's book _The Public’s Right to Know,_ to our
principles for freedom of information laws to our range of publications on
censorship and its direct consequences to society.

FREEDOM TO SPEAK 

From our first campaign in 1989 calling for the protection of author Salman
Rushdie to the recent joint celebration supporting Rushdie's work in light
of the appalling attack on him in 2022, we champion people’s right to
express their ideas freely and safely.
