Dear friend,

Here at FAMM, we started advocating independent oversight of prison systems because of the stories we heard from our incarcerated members – stories about crumbling facilities, inedible food, neglect, abuse, horrifying conditions, and lack of health care. We all know prisons are a mess and unsafe for the people who live and work in them. Part of the reason for that is because the vast majority of prisons have no oversight, transparency, or accountability.

FAMM is working to fix that lack of accountability. We have model prison oversight legislation that we share with lawmakers around the country. New Mexico, Virginia, Missouri, Mississippi, and Maryland all have very different prison systems, and they are all considering legislation that would create oversight. Oversight can include inspections of prisons, investigations of complaints from incarcerated people and staff, or both. FAMM is supporting these bills and urging more states to consider prison oversight.

We were also excited to see Gov. Katie Hobbs of Arizona create an independent prison oversight commission through an executive order. Arizona's prison conditions are so bad that a federal court ruled they violated the Constitution. The new oversight commission will inspect prisons and report its findings publicly. It's a good start for a prison system that has been failing with impunity for too long.

And we can't forget federal prisons. This year, FAMM will once again be urging Congress to create oversight for the Bureau of Prisons. Every prison system, large and small, needs a safe place people can go for help when prison administration doesn’t care or doesn’t listen.

We hope to see prison oversight sweeping the nation soon – but we can't do it without your support! Ask your lawmakers to support prison oversight in District Of Columbia here: [link removed] [[link removed]]
