For the past two months, the unelected Peruvian government of Dina Boluarte has unleashed a wave of terror. In the last 62 days alone, over 70 people demanding political change have been killed and thousands have been injured. These egregious human rights violations have been strongly condemned by leaders in Latin America but the Boluarte government still enjoys full support from the Biden administration.
Tell Biden to stop enabling the brutal repression of protesters by suspending all military aid and security assistance to Peru. <[link removed]>
Even members of congress have begun sounding the alarm. On January 31, a group of 20 House Democrats wrote a letter to the Biden administration calling to freeze security assistance to Peru until the crackdown ends and Peru’s armed forces are held accountable for their human rights violations. However, the administration has chosen to remain silent and reaffirmed its support for the Boluarte government by welcoming Ana Cecilia Gervasi, Boluarte’s foreign minister to Washington, where she met with members of Congress and business leaders.
Tell Biden to prioritize the well-being and demands of the Peruvian people and suspend all military assistance to Peru. <[link removed]>
The Biden administration’s unwillingness to strongly condemn the violent repression gives the Boluarte government a green light to continue its terror against the Peruvian people. On February 6, the Boluarte government decreed a state of emergency for 60 days in seven of the country’s 24 regions that have large indigenous populations, deploying troops and suspending democratic rights, such as freedom of assembly and speech. How would the international community respond if this level of human rights violence was deployed in Venezuela, Nicaragua or Cuba? Most likely they would call for foreign intervention; however, since Boluarte’s government is a neoliberal regime, there has been relative silence.

Despite the repression, the Peruvian people remain determined in their demands and refuse to concede to the right-wing government of Dina Boluarte. They demand Dina Boluarte’s resignation, the release of President Pedro Castillo and the drafting of a new constitution by and for the people. The people of Peru join the rest of Latin America in refusing to be cowed by the elite and are demanding justice.
