Vulture conservation highlights from 2019

Even if 2020 is already a few days old, the team at the Vulture Conservation Foundation wishes you a very Happy New Year! We hope that the new year will bring new hope, with more highs than lows in vulture conservation and beyond.

In 2019, we achieved great strides in vulture conservation, and we will continue to work with the same diligence and dedication to protect Europe's Vultures in the coming year.

LIFE with Vultures Cyprus

We became part of a new LIFE project that launched in 2019 - LIFE with Vultures. It is a four-year project aiming to save the vulnerable Griffon Vulture population in Cyprus by implementing targeted conservation actions to prevent the extinction of the species on the island and to establish a sustainable population. Together with our partners - BirdLife Cyprus, Game and Fauna Service and Terra Cypria - we will address the main threats the species face and reinforce the population in the island.

Win a GPS tag!

We are giving away a GPS tag to a project working on Griffon Vulture or Cinereous Vulture conservation in Europe!

Ecotone Telemetry donated a tag to us and we have decided to give it away to a vulture conservation project to support our international colleagues.

It's free to take part in the competition, which will run until Sunday 9 February 2020.

Vulture Poisonings

Unfortunately, 2019 ended on a sad note following a mass poisoning incident in Africa. Two days before Christmas in Northern Zululand, 16 vultures met a tragic fate, causing alarm for the region's diminishing vulture populations fearing that they could face extinction if these incidents continue at this rate. Vultures were gravely affected by poisoning in Africa in 2019, with more than 1,200 vultures estimated to have been deliberately poisoned across Southern and Eastern Africa, according to the Endangered WildLife Trust (EWT).

In Spain, another incident was detected in late December of a Cinereous Vulture dying by ingesting a poisoned bait laced with carbofuran - a highly toxic pesticide used for agricultural purposes, which is still used illegally even though its commercialisation has been banned in the European Union for more than ten years.

To help raise awareness about illegal vulture poisoning, we are supporting the Stolen Wildlife campaign, which recently released the second series of awareness photographs.
