Unfortunately, 2019 ended on a sad note following a mass poisoning incident in Africa. Two days before Christmas in Northern Zululand, 16 vultures met a tragic fate, causing alarm for the region's diminishing vulture populations fearing that they could face extinction if these incidents continue at this rate. Vultures were gravely affected by poisoning in Africa in 2019, with more than 1,200 vultures estimated to have been deliberately poisoned across Southern and Eastern Africa, according to the Endangered WildLife Trust (EWT).

In Spain, another incident was detected in late December of a Cinereous Vulture dying by ingesting a poisoned bait laced with carbofuran - a highly toxic pesticide used for agricultural purposes, which is still used illegally even though its commercialisation has been banned in the European Union for more than ten years.
