It’s been two days since catastrophic earthquakes and aftershocks caused extensive damage in northern Syria and southern Turkey — making it the strongest earthquake in this region in almost a century.
UNICEF Representative Angela Kearney is on the ground providing early reports from Aleppo in northern Syria, where she highlights the most urgent needs for children in the wake of the destruction.

The earthquakes have come at the worst possible time for vulnerable children and families. Severe winter weather and ongoing conflict in the region has already made this situation unbearable. As search and rescue efforts continue in Syria and Turkey, UNICEF is ensuring that children are safe, secure and have the supplies they need to stay warm and survive.

In both Turkey and Syria, winter weather kits with thick blankets, coats and more are being distributed by UNICEF mobile teams across the most affected regions. Especially in Syria, where there are multiple ongoing crises, providing kids with access to safe drinking water and sanitation services can help prevent illness — particularly in the early days of an emergency like this.
