When we love someone, they’re part of our hearts forever.

Darla and Sam had that forever love. The horses met shortly after Darla’s rescue and spent the next 12 years side by side. Darla loved him so intensely that they had to live alone; she’d get jealous when other horses vied for Sam’s attention! But they were also so close that we worried about what would happen when one would inevitably lose the other.

Sadly, this happened last year when Sam passed away at age 33. We moved Darla in with Joann and Zoe, our other horses at our California sanctuary, so that she wouldn’t be alone. It was tough at first; she just wasn’t herself without her other half.

With new friends by her side, we’re slowly seeing Darla’s sassy personality return. Still, no one can ever replace Sam. Darla is who she is because of the love they shared.
