The European Movement International (EMI) and Carnegie Europe will
hold their first event of the year on Wednesday at the European
Parliament. Entitled "How Can We Get European Democracy Right?", this
event will mark the launch of “Six Ideas for Rejuvenating European
Democracy,” a new paper that proposes constructive, practical ideas
for how we – European leaders, EU institutions, and civil society –
can get European democracy right. The event will feature an exchange
of views between Eva Maydell MEP and Commissioner Dubravka Šuica,
moderated by Richard Youngs.
This week, officials from all around the globe will be landing in
Davos, Switzerland, for the annual World Economic Forum summit.
Prominent political and business leaders will be present at the
50th Davos Summit, including European Commission President
von der Leyen who will deliver a keynote speech, and a handful of
other commissioners. It is expected that climate change will be a
major focus on this year’s meeting, as pressures rise on businesses
and politicians to tackle the global issue.
Today, the ministers of the euro area countries will meet together
to form the Eurogroup. The meeting will include discussions on the
subjects of: the IMF mission to the euro area; the updated draft
budgetary plan of Portugal for 2020; the economic policy of the euro
area; policy priorities of the new governments of Spain, Austria, and
Finland; and the deepening of the Economic and Monetary Union.

European Parliament
Following last week’s plenary session in Strasbourg, this week the
European Parliament holds multiple committee meetings back in
Brussels. Starting today, the committees will meet with
representatives of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the EU,
in order to discuss the Presidency’s priorities over the next six
months. Besides this, another major focus point will be the
Parliament’s opinion on the consent to the United Kingdom withdrawal
agreement. The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs
(LIBE) will hold debates, and votes will be taken in order to adopt a
draft opinion on the conclusion of the Brexit saga. The Committee on
International Trade (INTA), on the other hand, will focus on the
possibility of a trade agreement between the EU and Vietnam. Speaking
of the EU - the Petitions Committee (PETI) will analyse a special
report by the European Court of Auditors, namely to discuss the
effectiveness, transparency and openness of all tools available at EU
level to ensure that citizens can directly participate in and
contribute to the EU policy- and law-making process.

European Commission
It seems that a busy week lies ahead for the Commissioners, with
inter-institutional meetings to be had. For a start, today EU High
Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell,
will be spearheading the Foreign Affairs Council in order to review
recent international developments. In another meeting, budget and
administration Commissioner Johannes Hahn will represent the von der
Leyen team’s budgetary priorities at a meeting with the European
Parliament’s Committee on Budgets (BUDG). On wednesday, Commissioner
for Democracy and Demography, Dubravka Šuica, will be a speaker at the
conference "How Can We Get European Democracy Right?", hosted by the
European Movement International and Carnegie Europe. Later in the
week, President Ursula von der Leyen, along with Commissioners Frans
Timmermans, Maroš Šefčovič, and Paolo Gentiloni, will attend the World
Economic Forum summit in Davos.
