Dear friends,
Today, I’ve been reflecting on President Biden’s State of the Union speech from last night – and just how far we’ve come as a nation over the past two years.
When President Biden first took office in January 2021, we were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that claimed the lives of over a million Americans, the worst economic downturn since 2008, and a political crisis that threatened our very democracy. But as soon as he was sworn in, he immediately got to work with me and my colleagues in Congress to take action.
We quickly passed the American Rescue Plan that got more than 200 million Americans vaccinated against COVID and provided immediate relief to families struggling to make ends meet through the pandemic. Then, later in the year, we passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that’s creating good paying jobs and providing much needed investments into our crumbling roads, bridges, and water systems.
And that was just the start, friends.
In 2022, President Biden and Congressional Democrats continued delivering huge wins for the American people. To finally address the scourge of gun violence that has plagued our communities, we passed the first major gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. We also passed several key pieces of legislation aimed at tackling the growing mental health and addiction crisis, including two bills I introduced : the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Reauthorization Act , which ensures the continuation and strengthening of community-based youth suicide prevention efforts, and the MATE Act , which requires providers who prescribe highly addictive medications be trained to spot the signs of addiction and advise patients on treatment.
Abroad, we restored America’s role as a global leader on human rights and democracy. When Vladimir Putin launched his unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, we made it clear that we stand with the brave people of Ukraine by supplying them with the resources they need to fight for their freedom. And when opportunistic oil barons tried to take advantage of the resulting energy crisis by price gouging Americans at the gas pump, we passed the Inflation Reduction Act – historic legislation that’s not only reining in rising costs but also lowering prescription drug prices, investing in clean energy, and finally closing corporate tax loopholes.
We’ve accomplished so much , but as President Biden emphasized in his address, we have a long way to go. The road ahead may not be easy, but it’s a journey that we will continue along together. Whether it’s restoring the assault weapons ban to ensure no civilian has access to weapons of war, defending vital programs like Social Security and Medicare, increasing investment in mental health care services, or protecting the right to reproductive freedom, I’m dedicated to building a better America for the future generations.
