John,
Last night at his State of the Union address, when President Biden accurately noted that Republicans like Senators Rick Scott and Ron Johnson had endorsed a plan that would “sunset Social Security and Medicare” after 5 years, Republican politicians booed him.1 Even though “sunset Social Security and Medicare” was Mitch McConnell’s description of the Scott plan,2 the Republicans in attendance protested, insisting that they would never support cutting Social Security or Medicare.
If these politicians want to prove that they’ll never support cutting Social Security, they can make a more powerful statement than booing. They can take the pledge. Click here to send a message to your Senators and Representative demanding that they take the pledge!
Already, 218 members of Congress have taken that pledge.3 But there are still 322 to go… so we need to keep organizing!
This fight is bigger than just this year’s debt ceiling negotiations. Yes, top Republicans in the House and Senate indicated before the election that Social Security and Medicare would be on the table during debt ceiling negotiations.4 If last night’s jeers were any indication, Republicans are feeling the heat about those earlier promises and are going to look for cuts elsewhere.
But just last week, 2024 Presidential hopeful Mike Pence introduced a plan to privatize Social Security. These dangerous ideas aren’t going away―we need to make sure that every member of Congress takes the pledge NEVER to cut our Social Security and Medicare benefits!
Send a message to your members of Congress: Take the pledge! Never cut Social Security!
We’ve made incredible progress already―but this fight is not over until all of Congress takes the pledge.
Thanks,
